LinkedIn is the number one job finding and networking resource on the web! YET it’s not optimized for artist use – it’s optimized typically for more corporate, and start up jobs and long form productions. The typical approach to finding work with LinkedIn typically will not apply to Designers, Game Developers, TV and Feature Film Visual effects.

I strongly believe LinkedIn is a AWESOME and POWERFUL weapon but you need to know how to use it. This episode we cover how to hack your ranking and get it up there, shift your positioning within LinkedIn searches and typically build a solid profile that is going to allow you to anchor the types of contacts you want for future work.

This episode just touches the surface as there is far more we WILL be diving into at a later date but the most important steps to take first before the advanced tactics come, start with the foundation…

  1. Thanks for another awesome episode Allan, I always wondered whether adding people, whom you didnt know but are in the same category, is a right thing to do.
So is it better to go visual than a lot of words on your LinkedIn profile as a VFX artist? It does make sense, but the when following examples, LinkedIn show more of a corporate approach.

Waiting for the next episode now! As always its very motivating listening to you.

  2. Hello, Allan, thank you for your podcasts and the effort that you put in. Can I kindly ask you a short question? In some of your earlier podcasts you’ve mentioned that people who are just starting out and want to break in the industry (like me) should have a generalist approach and have an understanding of every aspect. And in another podcasts you also mentioned how important is to define your niche.
So I’ve stumbled across the question whether there is any difference between “3d generalist” and “CG generalist” and which naming would help in getting the job in the industry?

  3. Hi Allan!

    Another great episode!

I was wondering if you ever considered doing a mentoring course, but more focused on career (or just beyond FX)? I was really tempted to join your FX TDT last time, but I’m more on concept/design/modeling side of the pipeline and I wasn’t sure if that would be the best thing for me as I don’t have any particular interest in FX, but I would still really like to progress in career and join a mentor program.

Do you think of preparing something for broader audience?

    Thanks,
    Wojciech
