By far the most different episode I have made to date. Rather than focusing on interviewing artists or on core ways to build up your career. I wanted to share some of the tools _I_ use in production or day to day that are pivotal to getting things done.

There are some very useful email tools that really go above and beyond that I highly recommend, and many other tools and insights.

Going with the trend of doing something not done on this podcast so far – you can also go through this episode as a VIDEO by going to the link https://allanmckay.goeoqov0-liquidwebsites.com/31download/ to view the video and watch as I go through everything in the podcast on screen and demonstrate how I use these tools.

Furthermore I want to know what tools YOU use. Leave a comment below on what tools you find to be useful or critical to your day to day work! I would love to hear from you on this – maybe there’s some tools I don’t know about that might help me be more productive!

Finally, visit the link to watch the video companion as I visually walk through how to use all of these tools  https://allanmckay.goeoqov0-liquidwebsites.com/31download/ Click the link to watch the video

  1. Allan –

Another great podcast. Personally, I like the bit of everything approach for your podcasts (maybe it’s my ADHD speaking).
Great tool I use all of time (pc only):
Always on top – with a quick CRTL+SPACE it will force any window to always stay on top of the other windows.
    – more here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/218511/Windows.html

    Keep up the good fight!

    1. Thanks Justin! I actually told myself after doing the latest episode (32 – Becoming a linkedin Ninja) I need to try to just pick 3-5 key points I want to make in an episode, because more times than not I try to put 30+ key points in, and I assume it can be pretty overwhelming! But I’m glad you enjoyed the episode, I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback about it, makes me want to basing a few similar to that.

That’s a really great tool! Thanks for the heads up I’m going to check this out
I found another useful one the other day – which I discovered through sheer need – M8 Free Clipboard http://download.cnet.com/M8-Free-Clipboard/3000-2384_4-10267618.html
I have to say this is not the most attractive piece of software, and I’m sure there are nicer ones out there. But it’s free and it’s simple and does the job.
Simply a big clipboard whenever you copy or paste anything it captures them temporarily, as well as having a permanent one as well. So you have 20+ slots of all your copy history. Really great for storing lots of stuff to access over and over.

Thanks for the tip on the great tool Justin!!

    1. it’s so simple but I use it all the time now, I’m sure there are prettier ones out there but it’s free and it works!

  2. Hey, as always, great episode.

I use trello all the time as well, it’s just so plain and clean… loving it. And dont forget that you can actually bind all sorts of stuff into it, with email being the simplest. Really effective!

Another one i’d suggest, though you probably have a cleverer(more clever) way of doing it in your pipeline, is Post Haste. http://www.digitalrebellion.com/posthaste/ It’s so simple. It will basically create a template based directory structure for you, with custom names etc if needed.
I’ve also started using pinterest more than i would have thought… to gather references, collect links and what not.

  3. Hi Allan,

I really appreciate all the effort you’re going through to share what you know and learnt over the years. There’s relatively so few in this world that would give so much of their time and share so openly. I usually listen to podcasts to and from work in the car, I’m a bit behind on yours and was listening to this one this week. I started implementing some of the tools and was surprised how helpful they are, especially focus@will, wow, my drinks kept going cold while I worked away.

Off the top of my head, here’s one of the tools I use to easily backup or update my work between local networks and drives: http://www.freefilesync.org/

Also, refBoard (http://www.designerjon.com/) is used for image reference, which always stays on top of other windows. It’s really handy if you don’t have multiple monitors or want to keep your focus on one monitor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N5a5i8K4eQ

    Thanks 😀

  4. The dowload of the video doesn’t work. I don’t understand what It suppose happend when I submit My email. I receive a nice mail with the pdf but not the video

  5. Hi.

I can´t download the video. I only get a screen where you put your name and email but nothing happens. I tried so many times.

    Please I am really interested.
